Terra Madre Day
10 December 2009

A table full of food for Terra Madre Day at Set El Hossn eco-farm.

A great celebration of nature, food, ethnicity, culture and international unity, attended by 45 people: friends from the USA and UK, from local communities and from Anwaar NGO at Deir-Abu-Hennis village in Upper Egypt. Also,  friends from Cairo, the Alexandria Ibrahimia Church, and workers from the Tamr Henna Eco-village and the Royal Group for Organic Products. A Bedouin music group also joined us, and brought with them a camel! The day consisted of:

  1. a welcoming word from Philip Bishay, co-founder of Set El Hossn.
  2. a celebration of Bedouin music, with lively singing and dancing.
  3. a talk by Rev. Dr. Farouk Eldeiry (president of Anwaar NGO) on “The Value of Environment to our lives: Environmental readings from John Stott.”
  4. a wonderful dinner of fresh, authentic, hearty local food.
  5. a small fair including olives, olive paste, and olive oil from the Royal Group for Organic Products, and also natural stone bead necklaces, based on Bedouin style crafts.

Some of the 45 people who attended Terra Madre Day in 2009. Join us in December 2010!

Celebration of Terra Madre Day was a great experience for our eco-village. It helped us realize our potentiality of approaching our culture and other cultures through love and friendship. Slow food was a great festival of food and fellowship. It enhanced the contribution of different ethnic groups and cultures in celebrating the environment and thanking God for it.
